What Is An Abscessed Tooth?

An abscessed tooth is an infected pocket full of bad bacteria and pus. It forms either on the root of the tooth, on the gums next to the tooth’s root, or directly on the gums themselves. There are many things that can cause an abscessed tooth.

• Periodontal (Gum) Disease

Gum disease can cause severe infections in the gums, which can lead to an abscess.

• Infected Pulp Inside Tooth

Harmful bacteria can enter the tooth through an untreated cavity. When this occurs, the pulp (tissue in the middle of the tooth), will become infected and inflamed, often leading to the formation of an abscess.

• A Foreign Object Lodged in Gums

If a food particle or dental debris (such as a toothbrush bristle or piece of floss) gets lodged into the gums, this can cause an abscess to grow.
