How Sleep Apnea Can Prevent You From Getting a Good Night’s Rest

December 16, 2021
Woman covering her ears as her husband snores due to sleep apnea.

If you wake up groggy despite getting eight hours of sleep and suffer from chronic snoring, you may have sleep apnea, a disorder that affects 18 million Americans. You might be surprised to know that sleep apnea has close ties to your oral health. In this blog post, we’ll uncover more about this debilitating condition, along with treatments we offer at Springs Village Dentistry to help you find relief.

What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder where your breathing stops or becomes extremely shallow while you sleep. There are two types of sleep apnea. The most common form is obstructive sleep apnea. This is when the muscles in the back of your throat become relaxed as you sleep instead of contracting. They block your breathing. The second form is central sleep apnea, which occurs when your brain is unable to send the correct signals to the muscles that help you breathe while you sleep.

Signs of Sleep Apnea

Of course, you can’t tell if you have sleep apnea because it occurs while you’re sleeping. A sleep study will give a definitive diagnosis. But there are a few telltale signs to look out for.

  • Grogginess or fatigue despite getting enough sleep
  • Waking up in the middle of the night
  • Chronic snoring
  • Persistent headaches
  • Chronic dry mouth
  • Bad breath (halitosis)
  • Insomnia

Since sleep apnea disrupts your sleep cycle, it can be extremely damaging to your health. Sleep apnea is known for increasing your chances of developing liver disease, diabetes, and stroke, and can accelerate dental issues including decay and tooth loss.

Sleep Apnea Treatments

Two of the most common ways to treat sleep apnea are through oral appliance therapy and CPAP therapy, both of which we can guide you through at Springs Village Dentistry. Oral appliance therapy uses a device that looks similar to an athletic mouthguard to help guide your mouth to the correct position as you sleep. It promotes proper airflow to your lungs throughout the night. CPAP therapy uses a breathing machine that helps push air directly into your lungs through a mask as you sleep. It takes some getting used to and may cause bloating, facial irritation and sore throat to start.

Consistent exercise to aid weight loss, reducing alcohol consumption, and adjusting your posture at night can all help prevent or alleviate the symptoms of sleep apnea.

Use Your Dental Benefits Before They Expire!

November 12, 2021
Insurance screen is up with information about dental insurance.

Balancing a variety of health care appointments during the year is challenging and may leave you behind in your dental care. Besides that fact that ignoring preventive care can lead to the need for more expensive procedures later on, it’s also financially wise to take a look at your insurance plan to make sure that you are maximizing your dental benefits!

Dental Benefits

There’s a lot to remember as the holiday season approaches so it may have slipped your mind that dental benefits expire at the end of each year. These dental benefits often help cover the cost of necessary procedures so that you can keep your smile in good shape. When dental benefits aren’t used by the end of the year, they can’t be carried over into the next year. You may have met a deductible or threshold that would allow you to pay minimal for certain necessary procedures. If you don’t get the treatment before the end of the year, you’ll either have to wait to get it later or pay more than you would have.

Dental Exams & Cleanings

Most dental insurance plans cover two preventive dental visits per year. If you haven’t scheduled your second visit, now’s the time to do it. During a dental exam and cleaning, Dr. Moore or Dr. Molta will thoroughly examine your teeth, gums and mouth. One of our professional hygienists will thoroughly clean your teeth. Depending on your prior visit or time in-between visits, X-rays may or may not be taken. These visits to the office can prevent tooth decay, screen for oral cancer, and allow our team to help treat or prevent any existing dental problems from worsening.

Restorative Dentistry

During your preventive visit, our team may find an issue like a cavity or chip. Then you may need to select a restorative dental procedure to ensure the health and longevity of your natural teeth. Options for restoration include tooth fillings, dental crowns, root canals or tooth extractions. There is the possibility to use dental benefits to help cover the cost of these necessary services.

How Do I Straighten My Teeth Fast?

October 21, 2021
Cute smiling lady with dark curly hair and beautiful, straight teeth.

It can be exciting to take the steps towards having a straighter smile — but the wait for the perfect smile can be tough. That’s where Six Month Smiles® comes in! Springs Village Dentistry is proud to offer this expedited orthodontic solution for our patients.

What Is Six Month Smiles?

Six Month Smiles is an accelerated orthodontic option that can straighten patients’ smiles in just a matter of months. Springs Village Dentistry offers both of the Six Month Smiles options. One uses clear brackets and traditional orthodontic technology with high-tech wires that encourage gentle shifts of your teeth to their desired positions. The other option uses clear aligners. Our doctors will let you know which choice is best for you.

Some Advantages of Six Month Smiles

There are advantages to both options. Many patients say that Six Month Smiles braces are more comfortable than traditional metal braces. They’re also more subtle, too. Since they’re clear, they’re not as noticeable as metal braces. The clear aligners are also very discreet. This makes both choices a great option for adult patients who want to improve the look and function of their smile in a short timeframe.

How Does Six Month Smiles Work?

Six Month Smiles technology is used to correct crookedness, crowding, and gap issues. Because it only focuses on the teeth that show when you smile versus altering your bite alignment, it can straighten your teeth much faster than traditional metal braces. Once you receive your Six Month Smiles braces, you will come to our office once a month for check-ins to see how your treatment is progressing.

Is Six Month Smiles Affordable?

In many cases, Six Month Smiles is more affordable than alternative orthodontic options! At Springs Village Dentistry, we offer flexible financing for our treatments to make them affordable for all patients. We’ll let you know what the expected costs of your treatment are during your initial consultation so there will be no surprises!

What Is an Abscessed Tooth?

You may have heard the term abscessed tooth, but you may not know exactly what it means. Here’s what you need to know about abscessed teeth and how we treat them.

What Is An Abscessed Tooth?

An abscessed tooth is an infected pocket full of bad bacteria and pus. It forms either on the root of the tooth, on the gums next to the tooth’s root, or directly on the gums themselves. There are many things that can cause an abscessed tooth.

  • Periodontal (Gum) Disease

Gum disease can cause severe infections in the gums, which can lead to an abscess.

  • Infected Pulp Inside Tooth

Harmful bacteria can enter the tooth through an untreated cavity. When this occurs, the pulp (tissue in the middle of the tooth), will become infected and inflamed, often leading to the formation of an abscess.

  • A Foreign Object Lodged in Gums

If a food particle or dental debris (such as a toothbrush bristle or piece of floss) gets lodged into the gums, this can cause an abscess to grow.

Symptoms of an Abscessed Tooth

An abscessed tooth can cause a slew of uncomfortable dental issues and symptoms.

  • Chronic Halitosis
  • Heightened Tooth Sensitivity
  • Pain That Runs From Mouth & Down the Neck
  • Sour Taste in Mouth
  • Swollen, Bleeding Gums
  • Throbbing Tooth Pain
  • Tooth Pain When Chewing

Treatments For Abscessed Teeth

Treatment will vary based on the cause of each abscessed tooth. Depending on your unique dental situation, there are different treatments we will suggest.

Are Dental Implants Right For Me?

August 19, 2021
Model showing a dental implant in the lower jaw.

Are you missing one or more teeth? Tooth replacement options have significantly improved over the years. For many people, dental implants are a great option for restoring their smile. Are they the right choice for you?

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a small titanium post that we surgically implant in your jawbone. This replaces the root of the missing tooth, which other tooth replacements don’t do. If you don’t have the jawbone density to support the post, we can perform a bone graft. During several months of healing, your jawbone will fuse around the implant. When we are certain the implant is fully healed, we’ll place the artificial tooth. Dental crowns are common. We also use dental implants to support bridges and dentures.

What are the benefits of implants?

Dental implants are the most natural tooth replacement. As a permanent solution, they restore your appearance, return your full chewing function, and preserve your jawbone density! They’re also easy to care for. Simply brush, floss, and keep up with regular cleanings and exams at the dentist.

Am I a good candidate for implants?

A few factors determine if implants are right for you. First, we usually only recommend them for adults whose jaws have finished growing. It’s also important for you to have healthy gums. If you smoke, have diabetes, or gum disease, dental implants may not be the best option. However, most people are good candidates for implants.

Dental implants at Springs Village Dentistry

Dr. Molta and Dr. Moore in Holly Springs, NC provide compassionate, high-quality care to all their patients. If you’re missing any teeth, you’re well aware of how it affects your life. Dental implants restore your smile, your confidence, and your ability to eat your favorite foods! The process takes longer than dentures or bridges, but implants remain the most natural replacement. If that’s what you want, please schedule a consultation to see if implants are the right choice for you based on your health, budget, and needs!

How Long Does It Take To Recover From a Root Canal?

July 12, 2021
Blonde woman with her hand on her cheek indicating tooth pain.

It starts off as a throbbing toothache. Pretty soon you have facial swelling, bad breath, and are running a fever. If you have any of these symptoms, chances are you might need root canal therapy. Springs Village Dentistry offers professional and affordable root canal therapy at our Holly Springs, NC dental office. Here we’ll walk through the root canal therapy procedure and the post-op recovery process so you know what to expect.

What Does Root Canal Therapy Entail?

When you have decay or infection that spreads down to the root of your tooth, it’s important to salvage the healthy tissue of the tooth or else you’ll run the risk of losing it completely. Root canal therapy helps save your natural tooth by clearing out the infected and damaged tissue and allowing the healthy parts of the tooth to flourish.

During root canal therapy, your dentist will carefully numb the area around the tooth so you won’t feel any pain during the treatment. They will then drill a small hole in the tooth and examine the pulp, or the soft, innermost tissue of the tooth. They will then clear out any infected area of the pulp and replace it with a material called gutta percha. Next the area will be sealed with an inlay, overlay, or crown depending on what you need.

Post-op care after a root canal

When your root canal is over, you should take time to rest and heal after your treatment. When your anesthetic wears off, you might experience some discomfort and swelling. You can apply ice bags in 10-minute increments to help alleviate the discomfort. Your dentist will also suggest over-the-counter painkillers or write a prescription for medication to help manage the pain.

For a few days after your treatment, you should eat soft foods like yogurt, soup, scrambled eggs and mashed potatoes. You should drink water often, and avoid using tobacco products or straws which can aggravate the root canal site. When it comes to brushing and flossing, be extra careful around the surgery site until it heals properly. Your surgery site should heal within a week or two, and then you can resume your usual oral healthcare routine.
